Beneath The Surface
Artist: Heidi Mraz
Medium: Chromogenic on Aluminum Panel, Fine Art, Unique Edition - Original
Size: 30” x 45”
Portrait is of the Mullin Collection’s 1925 Bugatti Type 22 Brescia Roadster, nicknamed “Lady of the Lake” afterspending nearly 75 years submerged in Lake Maggiore, Italy.
Heidi Mraz painted her canvas background with water-soluble inks, took it to Lake Maggiore and submerged it to let the water wash away part of the painting. She conducted first-person interviews to piece together the history and essence of this remarkable car, which included the powerful story of a young man’s tragic death. In his memory and to prevent more youth violence, a local foundation was created with the money raised from the sale of the sunken Bugatti. From original location photography to the acquisition of historical documents, magazine articles, books, photos and other sources, more than 1500 images were carefully culled, curated and hand-cut to create this multi-dimensional and historically-based piece of art.
With her optically-rich, signature approach to collage made through the deconstruction of many materials and then the reconstruction of one illusory subject, Heidi Mraz plays with how the mind sees and perceives objects that then beg for further investigation.
