Artist: Ray West
Medium: Original Oil
Size: 103 cm x 76 cm x 4 cm
Weight: 7 kgs
Ray's paintings start much earlier than at his easel. Ray looks for reference opportunities whilst out and about and will take hundreds of photos hoping one will make that perfect picture. Recent inspiration comes from the automotive world, but Ray will look at things slightly differently, choosing to capture subjects through reflections rather than the more direct approach. This painting was created from one such photographic reference taken at Lotus Mayfair in London Piccadilly. The scene captures the iconic Lotus Type 99T driven by Ayrton Senna to victory in Monaco and Detroit in 1987, along with other vehicles reflecting on the showroom window, whilst observing the outside London hustle and bustle. It challenges the viewer to establish what is 'inside and out'.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Ray is an award‑winning pastel and pastel‑pencil artist based in Essex, known for his precise, hyper-realistic style. His work spans varied subjects, often focusing on motoring themes and striking plays of light, shadow, and reflection. Every piece begins with his own reference photography, capturing moments that spark his imagination and evolve into detailed, atmospheric artworks.
He creates subjects that genuinely fascinate him, investing many hours into layering pastel to convey both appearance and mood. Ray is the Membership Secretary of the Guild of Motoring Artists, a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America, and a Journeyer Member of the Pastel Guild of Europe.
