Biography
Birmingham-based micro-artist Graham Short has been redefining the boundaries of human precision and endurance since 1980. Internationally acclaimed for creating some of the world’s smallest and most intricate engravings, his remarkable work has captured global attention, inspired documentaries, and led to invitations to prestigious exhibitions, including at Buckingham Palace.
Short’s artistic journey began with a traditional engraving apprenticeship in the 1960s, supplying finely crafted stationery to royalty, government bodies, and leading institutions. His fascination with microscopic detail evolved into a lifelong obsession, culminating in celebrated works such as The Lord’s Prayer engraved onto the head of a pin, the phrase Nothing is Impossible etched into the edge of a razor blade, and a miniature portrait of Queen Elizabeth II created in honour of her Jubilee.
His commitment to perfection is legendary, working only at midnight to avoid vibration, slowing his heart rate below 30 beats per minute, and engraving between heartbeats under a microscope. Through themes of faith, literature, and endurance, Short’s art draws from Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Russian Orthodox traditions, each piece executed with deep reverence and meticulous care.
Exhibited internationally and held in collections spanning private buyers, museums, and cultural institutions, Short’s work continues to inspire awe. In 2016, his engraved Jane Austen £5 notes, quietly released into circulation, sparked a worldwide treasure hunt. In 2024, his artistic and charitable contributions were recognised by King Charles III at a Royal Garden Party.
Renowned not only for his technical brilliance but also for his humility and humour, Graham Short stands as one of the greatest living engravers, a testament to the belief that, indeed, nothing is impossible.
